Julia Sorrell's olive trees on show at the Mall Galleries - London
Puglia’s famous centuries old olive trees have been Julia Sorrell’s subject material - the trees at the Masseria Brancati go back to the Roman period and beyond.
It is in the observation of nature that the art of Julia is based, whether it be a large twisted tree stump, a dried contorted leaf, the angularity of crystalline rock, or the flowing of a shell. All of this can be abstracted from its context, and meticulously transformed into a new visionary entity. A powerful poetic form of emotional intensity has been created where the logic of associations is of secondary importance. The usual appearance of our natural world is transformed into a harmonious whole which is very personal to her and outside contemporary conventions.
Julia’s work will be on show at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour at the Mall Galleries 30/03/2011 - 10/04/2011 10am to 5pm
