Alfredo De Giuseppe - Film Director

Alfredo De Giuseppe was born in Tricase in 1958. As a young man of many passions and ambitions he started a very successful business career. Today he is a proud father of four and a brilliant businessman with a strong artistic soul. He has already published eight books. The Hidden Art, his first film, and 'The Last Tavern', to be shown at this year's LIDF (01/05/2010 British Museum) are the product of his intense love for his home, Salento, imbued with art and a true humanism, both distinctive features of all his work.
The Accademia asks Aldredo De Giuseppe some questions:
Councillor, entrepreneur, writer, director, married with four children. Where does Alfredo De Giuseppe get his energy from?
I cannot imagine a life devoid of interests, passion and commitment – it all comes natural to me. Then comes my hometown Tricase that, with its 18.000 inhabitants, eases everything with efficient services (school, hospitals, offices of all kind … the sea) and the peace necessary for a  “buen retiro”.

L’Arte Nascosta (The Hidden Art), fourth place at the London International Documentary Festival (25 films shortlisted), is your very first film. How was this international experience?
I felt enthusiastic and most happy to have met so many people that have been pleased with my film, its photography and images. I also rolled the camera whilst in London and hope to translate the images into a film.

After this first cinematographic success, which would you say is your best means of communication, books, films, or something else?
Ever since I was a child, writing has been for me a way of exploring the world, measuring up with my milieu - a lab at the centre of my human experience. IHowever, in recent months I have discouvered that it is images that reach people more easily. Although I am not an experienced director, but rather a ‘director of ideas’, I’d like to continue with more films.

Tricase has given birth to so many artists with Cinesalento, the Salento International Film Festival within its city walls. Would you say this is a coincidence or is there something in the water of Tricase that is magic?

Here there is always very little water, especially in the summer. There is however some artistic propensity in Tricase that comes from its cultural and historical heritage.

What/who has helped shape your artistic flair?
My youth has been a mix of street life, reading and friendships. As a very young man I frequented all the Cineforum nearby and when there wasn’t a good film to watch I read American authors of the 1900. However, I very much admired Pier Paolo Pasolini for his free way of thinking.

Undoubtely, L’Arte Nascosta’ (The Hiden Art) represents a great moment of self actualisation. Is there another time in your life that has been particularly gratifying?
Feeling loved, unconditionally, by my four children.

And the most difficult – how have you overcome it?
Separating from my wife – despite loving one another. I have overcome this difficult time thanks to writing and the love I received from my children.

What is ‘hope’ for you?
An honest game between gentlemen, respecting others, respecting rules and respecting the environment.

What advice do you have for young professionals working around the world?
Work well and love the place where you are without forgetting your roots, that way you won't end up feeling like candles in the wind.
Which book will you pack for your next holiday?
De Tranquillitate Animi (On tranquillity of mind) by Seneca the younger

Which film will you watch next?
I enjoyed “Gran Torino”.  In a few days I will meet Helen Mirren and Taylor Hackford who have bought houses near Tricase, I shall ask them for a film tip.

Future. What is your next dream?
Make a successful film, that could summarise everything I have seen and lived so far ... but, this is something we can talk about at  he next interview. I thank you all.
