Carlo Moschetta - radio presenter

Radio Presenter Carlo Moschetta is a drummer with artist development & management experience. He is a co-director of an independent label, Roman Road Records.
Carlo presents a weekly London based radio show – The ATOMIC MOSQUITO Radio Show (tm) - aimed at introducing and promoting unsigned artists, and has showcased countless live music events all over London, including shows at the BBC Television Centre, where he regularly has a live show as well as private showcases for the music industry. Lately, Carlo organised the ATOMIC MOSQUITO live unsigned music stand for ‘La dolce Vita’ in London, which attracted over 20,000 people over four days. He also organised the ATOMIC MOSQUITO unsigned live music for the Grand Gala event at the Intercontinental Hotel, Park Lane – for many VIP’s including England Manager Fabio Capello.
Needless to say, Carlo Moschetta and his ATOMIC MOSQUITO brand has gained a healthy reputation for promoting quality unsigned and gifted artists. His remarkable passion for music is summed up by Andrea Dobson - The Sunday Times:

‘Carlo has a very unique style that can be heard over the radio waves. There is an immense passion that he shares with all of his listeners and you can hear the excitement in his voice! Not to mention the lovely tones of THAT Italian accent.. I would be very surprised if this guy does not become hugely popular and takes the UK by storm. In other words watch this space...

Accademia Apulia UK has asked Carlo the following questions:

What is the inspiration behind ATOMIC MOSQUITO show and your Radio presenting?
Put simply, the love for music and for the people who make it.

What do you look for in unsigned musicians?
When faced with new talent, I always ask myself: Does it transmit something to you? Does it sound real, genuine and convincing or is it yet another half-cooked product? People forget that they can only be the best by being themselves, and that imitating others is not the way forward. When I come across people that have taken the time to really think it through in order to invest their life in music – doesn’t matter what - I know it instantly.
I respect humble hard working people although sometimes they have to put some swagger on when performing on stage, but that’s the business. The important thing is to never forget who you are, as your uniqueness impregnates the music and everything you do.

How do you select unsigned artists?
They need to be talented and work very hard at it. They also need to be good people to work with:  I cannot work with time-wasting artists who are full of themselves. I have learned my lesson, so when I meet people like that, I just walk away.

Has there been an artist that has particularly grabbed your attention recently?
This is a £ 1-million question. Well … there are so many talented young artists, but let me tell you that, Dave Press, Tidor, Luke Simons, and The Branco Heist, are all very promising in their respective music genres and I am sure, they are destined for success. I am also collaborating with Mo from HiPhonProductions and with a couple of very young artists soon to be signed to a label and cannot say much at present but can certainly foresee a very bright future for them both.

Given that our association aims to promote young talents, are there any other x-factor-musicians in your books?
How do I begin? Laine Hines, Niky Stevens, Nobody Slave, Kym Allen’Astria, Vall,  Pearl band lead by Denny Laine’s daughter Heidi Jo Hines, Avipaul, Carmel Helene, Isaac’s Aircraft,  Satsangi, The Floe, Peter Lucas band, Tener Duende, are just some of the many talented young people I’ve had the pleasure of working with.

X-factor is now a world phenomenon - several uninhibited talented artists have been discovered this way. How important is confidence for musicians to get their music heard? Is your radio show the ticket for musicians with stage fright?
Confidence is everything. If Artists don’t believe in themselves, why should anyone else? It all starts from within and I am not talking about being arrogant or bigheaded - I am only saying that confidence and self-belief are of such relevance that cannot be stressed enough. Normally, confidence is achieved or sharpened trough experience and hard work.  The best cure for stage fright is to throw yourself into the deep-end remembering to enjoy the experience as much as the audience you are performing for does.  If however the stage is not for you, don’t worry, you can still leave your mark by composing or writing and let someone else do the performing.

What makes a 'good' track for Carlo Moschetta?
I believe that the starting point is the voice, the music, then, immediately after that, come the lyrics.  You can have an excellent song recorded poorly on a mobile phone, maybe just humming it, but if it is good humming it will work. On the other hand, you can have a great recording of a poor song, which will never work. The song needs to ‘communicate’ its feelings and, as they say, create a ‘vibe’ around it.

Name your favorite contemporary band?

Oh my God I am in trouble now! I really do not have ‘one’ band that can give me everything I want from music. One thing is for sure though: I am into inspiring music, including Classical! I think you could define me as ‘a passionate lover of good music’ whichever genre happens to be. Great music is just that. No, I won’t give you the name of one favorite contemporary band, even though I am tempted to mention Patrick Watson!

Will there ever going to be room for Italian music in the English charts?

I certainly would like to think so. It has been the case in the past. Good things take time but when they happen they stay on for a long while.

Tell us about your Indie label?
The idea of an independent label has been latent in my head for a long time. Then it finally materialized when I joined forces with an incredibly talented Producer/Sound Engineer, Maurizio Panella - Mo. The way Mo is able to record music and make it sound just so alive blows me away every time. So, one day I simply asked him: Would you join me in creating an independent Label? To which he answered ‘’yes’’!
While looking for names, a great friend of mine, Alan, suggested the name Roman Roads Records, since both Mo and I are from Rome and, as they say, ‘all the roads take you to Rome’. We all instantly liked this name very much.

What is your next dream?
I dream of great things, but in the morning I like to put things into perspective. Things are moving forward; all I say is “watch this space!”

What is your message for aspiring young musicians out there?

Ask yourself why you want to be a musician and spend a large part of your life sleeping rough away from home, touring on busses close to the bass-player’s smelly feet. Also, remember: be prepared to sacrifice other aspects of your life for the love of music. If you are unsure, all of this will feel as if you are giving up a lot and working way too hard.  I know that you are probably like me just possessed and blessed by the music bug and that is not going to go away, so, trust me, feed it and go all the way to the top and beyond!
Finally, your talent is only 50% of the final bill - you will have to find the time and energy to fill the balance.

Good luck from the team at Atomic Mosquito
