Francesca Martire - modern art dealer
Graduated from the renowned University of Padua, Francesca Martire, Psychologist, met London artist Eddie King in the early 80s - both were part of the alternative scene of Padua. Francesca followed Eddie King to London where she met other key figures who lead her to the formation of a company specialising in Modernism and Post-War Design.
Today her studio at Alfie's Market includes a wide range of exquisite international objects - pieces that Francesca considers essential to a home environment; many of her objects are present in several private and public art collections.
Accademia Apulia has asked Francesca Martire a few questions:
Which is the most interesting aspect of your job?
The most interesting aspect of my work is dealing with different people, objects, situations, travels – it’s more than just work – it’s a way of life.
The economic crisis has adversely affected many businesses worldwide. How has the current crisis affected www.francescamartire.com ?
Despite three recessions we are still here. I agree with Philip Stark, who says in an interview that those who are intrinsically DIVERSE do not suffer too much at times when customers become selective with their purchases, such as during a financial crisis.
How does post-war desing differ from bric-a-brac?
Elegance, clear lines are found in may beautiful objet d'art from the post-war era. 'Unconventional' design is for people with a vision that goes beyond convergent thinking. Postmodernism is a cultural and intellectual phenomenon, it's a multi-million industry - people can't get enough of it.. Not bad for bric-a-brac, don't you think?
Which is your favourite book? And film?
The very last book I read and enjoyed was Publio Ovidio’s The Art of Loving – my first classic – light, real and adorable. Films? ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s directed by Blake Edwards.
What are your plans for the future?
I am superstitious – I won’t talk about it!
