Max Viccardi - figurative artist

Max Viccardi’s work reflects the volatility and power of emotion by combining unusual and often opposing materials with a strong sense of colour and attention to shape. Taking his inspiration from an interest in the complexity of human relationships and the vast array of emotions that accompany them, Viccardi’s mixed media sculptures are a means of articulating some of the more problematic matter of human experience in a very tactile way. Each of his pieces has an immediate and powerful visual impact, their beauty a means of drawing the viewer in for closer scrutiny

An element of curiosity about the interaction of materials meshes with science-like precision in their execution. Viccardi uses glass, polyester resin, various metals, fibreglass, pigment, beads and minerals to create his emotional depictions, encasing them in Perspex as if to float in space. Sharp prongs jut out against an intensity of colour, much like a violently inflicted, yet compellingly beautiful, wound. Intricately hand soldered web-like structures appear as cocoons with intermingled stones and crystals, their fragility becoming both an expression of vulnerability and the need to protect that which is precious.

With each piece taking an average of four months to complete, Viccardi’s interpretation of, and experimentation with, materials is itself a relationship. Built up over time, these manifestations culminate in dense networks of complexity against shiny, fluid-like surfaces. Arresting and intense, his work is a visual expression of emotion, fragility, beauty and violence – it is passion.

My artwork is amazing because ...

It hits you deep down inside, before you know what it represents you already feel it, it is tactile, it plays with your senses.

I appreciate what art critics have to say, but ...

In the end only the artist himself knows what his art is, what it means, how it did come to be.

Last piece of good advice someone gave me was…

"Be anything you want to be as long as you are happy" this was my Grandmother advice many years ago.

My greatest achievement so far is ...

After years of straggles, doubts and pain I finally managed to have my own exhibition, my art, my life, my love was there for everyone to see.

At night I dream of…

Messy stuff, which is why I prefer to dream with my eyes wide open.

The artist who influenced me the most is…

The Universe. Who and what surrounds me, the world, the people, the sounds, the images, this is the influence, not one artist, but the Universe.

If I weren't talking to you right now I'd be...

In Morocco, facing the Mediterranean Sea, nothing in the horizon, but sounds, smells, colours, and feelings coming along with the waves.

I wish people would take more notice of...

The pain in the world, and would join forces to help alleviate human suffering.

A common misperception of me is...

I am a light-hearted kind of person, which means that the depth of my soul gets easily missed.

I am not a politician but...

I would turn the world of politics into a voluntary organization ran by people who are not on any payroll, but that are keen to make real changes.

I'm good at..

Listening to the emotional waves around me.

I'm bad at...

Remembering routines, everyday matters, saying "no" to friends.

The ideal night out is...

Meeting new people from different backgrounds, from different countries, I find people inspiring.

In moments of weakness I...

Isolate myself; being alone has a healing effect on me.

In a nutshell, my philosophy is this …

Never take anything for granted, take life for what it is without too much planning.
