Simon Jessop - Crime Analyst
Where do you come from? Where do you live?
I was born near Manchester, but have lived most of my life in London. I currently live in North East London in a place called Harringey.
What do you do and which is the most interesting aspect of your job?
I currently work for the Metropolitan Police as an intelligence analyst. The most interesting aspect of the job is being trusted to influence the deployment of police resources in order to best combat crime on the borough.
Which is the most important achievement of your professional career/life to date?
Watch this space, as yet I'm only starting out in my career. Moving to Berlin for a year and working in a foreign country, learning the language and supporting myself was an immensely rewarding experience.
Do you know a good recruitment agency/organisation that could help others to progress in your field? What advice do you have for them?
I used Brook Street to get my first temping job when I returned from Berlin, they specialise in office work and got me an decent job very quickly which allowed to search for more permanent and rewarding job in the meantime. I would recommend the Guardian Jobs website as it has comprehensive coverage of all sectors of employment and is easy to use and provides lots of advice to would-be applicants.
How do you spend your free time? Which is your favourite bar/restaurant/club?
I spend my spare time playing football, going out to dinner with friends, having friends over to my flat for dinner, and enjoying all that London has offer in terms of culture. My favourite restaurant is, just about, The Garrick, on Garrick Street (near Charing Cross Station) which is a lovely, cheap French restaurant which does a mean steak and chips for £13.00 which is very hard to beat in London. My favourite bar is Gordon's Wine Bar (near Embankment tube) and is in an old wine cellar, is very cool and serves excellent wine and port.
As for pubs I recommend any Samuel Smith Pub, in particular the Cittie of York and Princess Louise on High Holborn or THe Angel on St. Giles Circus.
Which is your favourite book? And film?
My favourite book, at the moment anyway, is a book called Oblamov by a little known Russian author called Goncharov. As for films, my favourite is Dr. Strangelove--- Peter Sellar's finest hour.
What are your plans for the future?
Write a novel, retire to the country and live an arcadian life style. Failing that live happily with my new wife and enjoy my youth.
