The Accademia asks Vito Cardonio the following questions:
From Bari to London. Why?
I am deeply 'Barese' and ove Puglia, but after a degree in Engineering I had no choice but to relocate to a larger city in order to fulfil my professional ambition: employment opportunities in a more international setting. The move to London, however, has not been straightforward. First I moved to Rome, followed by Darmstadt, Milan, Parma and, once again, Rome where I moved with my family. We finally relocated to London a year ago.
What is the most interesting aspect of your present profession?
The most interesting aspect of my job is being able to work for different firms in different fields with yet more different and challenging management styles. Being able to form long-term professional and personal relationships with interesting and stimulating colleagues at all levels is another very interesting aspect of my job.
What do you most miss about Italy?
My family and I live well in London but, ... we could do with more sunshine (so used we are to the warm 'scirocco' breeze of Bari). Oh, a little more flexibility would be nice too.
What less?
The standard of living in big cities is normally quite low when compared to London's ... as is often the case for public transport, the traffic, the degree of care of public places (offices, streets, parks, playgrounds).
The most gratifying moment of your career/life?
At a professional level, there are two events that I like to remember: my Masters Degree in Business Administration at the Bocconi ... it was almost a bet to leave a 5-year service workplace to go back to academia; Being made partner of two world class Management Consultancy firms. At a personal level, is the birth of my son - a unique emotional time.
And the most difficult - how have you overcome it?
Undoubtedly, the death of my father when I was 18 years of age. A difficult time that thanks to my family's affection I managed to overcome and remain focused on my studies
How do you define 'success'?
I would like to think of success as a combination of balanced actualisations that involve family, work, friends and social life.
What is hope?
"Life is Hope", as stated by Oscar Wilde.
What is your next dream?
Apart from continuing with my interesting and challenging profession ... I would like to start my own business.
What advice do you have for any young Pugliesi working around the world in search of affirmation??
I am most proud of my roots. I receive a steady stream of compliments from people for Puglia and Pugliesi renowned for their entrepreneurial skills as well as being industrious, vivacious and sincere. For anyone living overseas, it is most important to be able to learn any positive aspect of customs and cultures. I believe we should exploit the wealth of experience and capabilities that can be used to promote and further develop Puglia's full potentials. Undoubtedly, the Accademia Apulia can play a pivotal role in guiding these efforts.
My best wishes to all the associate members!
