Alessandro's dream
My name is Alessandro, I'm a 31 year old married man with a 4 year old child. I come from Conversano, a small town in the province of Bari, southern Italy. My adventure began when two years ago I first took a plane to London to visit some friends who lived there. It did not take long to eventually move to London, leaving behind italian politics and the Italian economic crisis.
Once in London, I went to a Job Centre looking for work straight away. I was lucky enough to land myself a job as a baker, something I had never done before (I forgot to say that I am a lawyer), but I figured that it would be a stepping stone all the same.
It goes without saying, that job prospects, quality of life, parks, spaces for children and mutual respect are far better here in London.
After much research, I received a job offer from an Italian law firm in London, a job congenial to my training and professional background - I still remember the day I received the call - my wife and I were incredulous, but so excited.
When I look back at the time when I worked as a baker - only a few weeks ago, I can’t help thinking of how difficult it was to explain to family and friends back in Italy why I had left the old country to become a ‘‘baker’ - to many the decision to move my young family to such new terrain was, simply, absurd.
In conclusion, I can’t honestly say that I got there yet, but one thing is for sure, that right now my son is a happy child in a loving school in a safe neighborhood - it may not be much but at least my son appreciates something really special.
