The Migration Museum - an amazing Project
It was back in 2003, in a speech to the Social Market Foundation, that Barbara Roche, former Minister for Immigration, first issued a challenge to the cultural sector to back the ideal of a national Migration Museum. Some years later the Migration Museum Working Group was formed and, in 2009, it secured funding from the Baring Foundation, National Trust and Stone Ashdown Trust enabling it to commission independent research into the representation of migration within existing institutions and to see what more could be done. Since then, and with seed funding from the Baring Foundation, the Migration Museum Project has been born. It has the support of a growing number of distinguished friends, Kwame Kwei-Armah, the Rt Hon David Blunkett, Lord Dholakia, Lord Bhikhu Parekh among others, with a working group encompassing individuals from many walks of life who share a passion for telling the migration story in Britain’s first dedicated national museum.
The Migration Museum: the Museum of all our stories
When it opens, the Migration Museum will tell the story of movement into and out of the UK in a really fresh and engaging way. It will be an enquiry into who we are, where we came from and where we are going. The Museum will certainly represent the thrilling tales, the emotion and the history that have gone into shaping Britain’s national fabric.
