Accademia Apulia has asked Emily the following questions:

What makes a good  producer?

Someone with vision, patience and resources. You have to be able to find the right project. Have seven years (on average per feature film) to spend on it and be able to support yourself through the process.

Who would you say is a good producer?

Rebecca O'Brien has had a n amazingly long and varied career and worked on some of my favourite films. And has a reputation as being a lovely person and a fair producer.

How do cash and connections interact in the world of a producer?

They are very important. You need to have a realistic way of supporting yourself until film supports you (which might be years) and once the film is made you need to make sure that there is enough cash for a healthy distribution plan. Connections and networking is the life blood of a young producer - once you have made some movies they should speak for you, but until then you need to meet everyone you can.

What is the best route to become a producer?

There are many ways, but the two clear ones are:

Start producing short films, get them distributed out to the festivals and then head towards features.

Start out on the set of other people's films, as runner and work your way up in any of the departments.

Which feature film would you rate top dog?

I love movies like Feston and Red Road for what they achieve on no budgets. In terms of genre / tent pole movies this year I really enjoyed Alice in Wonderland and How to Train you Dragon.

And the worst film?

Sex in the CIty II

What project are you working on at present?

I have three features on my slate:
The Nile - an epic, true love story about discovering the source of the Nile in 1860s. Susannah White (Nanny McPhee Returns, Generation Kill, Bleak house) is directing.
The Arbitrator - an action thriller with Nick Powell (2nd unit Bourne, Batman, Cinderella Man) signed to direct.
Waking Beauty - A family entertainment fairy tale set in modern day New York

What has been the most gratifying moment of your professional career so far?

Shooting my first independent feature in Switzerland this summer.

Of the films you have produced to date, which is the one that makes you proud?

My first feature - Jump - directed by Bindu de Stoppani.

And the most challenging moment of your career? What did you learn?

Jump again! I learnt you have to be on the ball 100% but that many problems resolve themselves and stress is the least useful thing to allow to cloud your judgement.
